G. 9:1-10:21 JUDGMENT & DIVISION BECAUSE OF A HEALING

1. 9:1-7 LESSON IN GOD'S MERCY: BLIND MAN HEALED

a. 9:1 And passing by, he saw a man blind from hisbirth.

b. 9:2 QUESTION BY DISCIPLES

And his :disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, who was sinning,

this man, or his :parents, that he should be born blind?


c. 9:3 ANSWER BY JESUS

Jesus answered, Neither did this mansin, nor his :parents:

but that the works of :God should be manifested in him.


d. 9:4 THE NEED OF WORKING WHILE IT IS DAY

WE must work the works of him that sent me, while itis day:

night comes, when no man can work.


e. 9:5 While I am in the world, I am Light of the world.

f. 9:6-7a AN UNUSUAL HEALING

When he had thus spoken, he spit on the ground, and made clay of the spittle,

and with the clay anointed his :eyes,

7and said to him, Go, wash in the pool of :Siloam

g. 9:7b He went away therefore, and washed, and came seeing.

2. 9:8-12 NEIGHBORS QUESTION THE MAN

a. 9:8 QUESTION BY NEIGHBORS

The neighbors therefore, and they that saw him :aforetime,

that he was a beggar, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?


b. 9:9a Others said [that] It is he: others said, No, but he is like him.

e. 9:11 ANSWER BY THE FORMER BLIND MAN

HE answered, The man :called Jesus made clay,

kai ePEchriSEN [2025] mou tous oph-thalMOUS, kai EI-PEN moi [HOti], HUpa-ge eis ton Si-loAM,

and anointed my :eyes, and said to me [that], Go to :Siloam,

kai NIpsai: a-pelTHON oun, kai niPSAme-nos [3538], aNEble-psa [308].

and wash: I went away therefore, and washed, andreceived sight.


f. 9:12a And they said to him, Where is HE? kai EIpan auTO, POU es-tin eKEInos?


g. 9:12b He said, I do not know. LEgei, Ouk OIda.


3. 9:13-34 WORK OF JESUS BRINGS PERSECUTION AND DIVIDED HOME

a. 9:13 They bring unto the Pharisees the oneaforetime blind.

b. 9:14 A SABBATH HEALING

Now is was thesabbath on the day when :Jesus made the clay,

and opened his :eyes.


c. 9:15a Again therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he received hissight.

d. 9:15b And he said to them, He put clay upon my :eyes, and I washed, and I see.

e. 9:16a RETORT BY THE RELIGIOUS PHARISEES

Ele-gon oun ek ton Pha-riSAIon tiNES,

Some therefore of the Pharisees said,

Ouk EStin HOUtos paRA TheOU ho ANthro-pos, HOti to SABba-ton ou teREI [5083].

This :man is not from God, because he keeps not the sabbath.


f. 9:16b But others said, How can [a man] a sinner do such signs?

ALloi de Ele-gon, Pos DUna-tai [ANthro-pos] ha-mar-toLOS toiAUta seMEIa [4592]poiEIN?


g. 9:16c And therewas a division among them. kai SCHISma [4978]en en auTOIS.


h. 9:17a They say therefore to the blind managain, What do YOU say of him, in that he opened your :eyes?

i. 9:17b Andhe said [that], He is a prophet.

j. 9:18-19 JEWISH LEADERS QUESTION HIS PARENTS

Ouk ePIsteu-san oun hoi IouDAIoi peRI auTOU,

The Jews therefore did not believe concerning him,

that he had been blind, and had received sight,

HEos HOtou ePHOne-san tous goNEIS auTOU tou a-naBLEpsan-tos,

until they called the parents of him that had received sight,

that he was born blind? How then does he now therefore see?


k. 9:20-21 RESPONSE OF PARENTS

His :parents answered and said, We know that this is our :son,

kai HOti tuphLOS e-genNEthe: pos de nun BLEpei,

and that he was born blind: 21but how he now sees,

we do not know; or who opened his :eyes, WE do not know:

ask him; he is of age; HE shall speak for himself.


l. 9:22 REASON FOR CAUTIOUS ANSWER OF THE PARENTS

These things said his :parents, because they feared the Jews:

for the Jews had agreed already, that if any should confess

m. 9:23 Therefore said his :parents [that], He is of age; ask him.

n. 9:24 PHARISEES CHALLENGE FORMER BLIND MAN AGAIN

ePHOne-san, oun, ton ANthro-pon ek deuTErou hos en tuphLOS,

They called, therefore, a second timethe man that was blind,

kai EIpan auTO, Dos DOxan to TheO: heMEIS OIda-men HOti HOUtos ho ANthro-pos ha-mar-toLOS es-tin.

and said to him, Give glory to :God: WE know that this :man is a sinner.


o. 9:25 HIS UNANSWERABLE RESPONSE

a-peKRIthe oun eKEInos, Ei ha-mar-toLOS es-tin, ouk OIda:

HE therefore answered, Whether he is a sinner, I know not:

hen OIda, HOti, tuphLOS on, ARti BLEpo.

one thingI know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.


p. 9:26 They said therefore to him, What did he to you? how did he open your :eyes?

EIpan oun auTO, Ti ePOIeSEN soi? pos EnoiXEN sou tous op-thalMOUS?


q. 9:27 A GOOD ANSWER

a-peKRIthe auTOIS, EIpon huMIN Ede [2235], kai ouk eKOUsa-te;

He answered them, I told you already, and you did not hear;

ti PAlin THEle-te aKOUein? me kai huMEIS THEle-te auTOU ma-theTAI geNESthai?

Why would you hear itagain​? would YOU also become his disciples?


r. 9:28 A NASTY RESPONSE

kai e-loiDOre-san [3058] auTON, kai EIpan, Su ma-theTES ei eKEInou;

And they reviled him, and said,

Su ma-theTES ei eKEInou; heMEIS de tou Mo-uSEos esMEN ma-theTAI.

You are that man'sdisciple; but WE are disciples of :Moses.


s. 9:29 WE know that :God has spoken to Moses: but as for this man, we do not know from where he is.

heMEIS OIda-men HOti Mo-uSEI leLAle-ken ho TheOS: TOUton de, ouk OIda-men POthen esTIN.


t. 9:30 A POINTED RESPONSE BY THE FORMER BLIND MAN

a-peKRIthe ho ANthro-pos kai EIpen auTOIS, En TOUto gar to thau-maSTON [2298] es-tin,

The man answered and said to them, Why, in this is the marvel,

HOti huMEIS ouk OIda-te POthen esTIN, kai EnoiXEN mou tous aph-thalMOUS.

that YOU know not from where he is, and he opened my :eyes.


u. 9:31 AN ADDED INSIGHT

OIda-men HOti ho TheOS ha-mar-toLON ouk aKOUei:

We know that :God does not hear sinners:

all' eAN tis the-o-seBES [2318] e, kai to THEle-ma auTOU poiE, TOUtou aKOUei.

but if any be worshiper of God, and does his :will, him he hears.


v. 9:32 For ages it was unheard-of that any one opened theeyes of one born blind.

ek tou aiOnos ouk eKOUStheHOti eNEoXEN tis oph-thalMOUS tuphLOU ge-gen-neMEnou.


w. 9:33 If this manwas not from God, he could do nothing.

ei meen HOUtos paRA TheOU, ouk eDUna-to poiEIN ouDEN.


x. 9:34a They answered and said to him, YOU were altogether born in sins, and do YOU teach us?

a-peKRIthe-san kai EIpan auTO, En ha-marTIais su e-genNEthes HOlos, kai su diDAskeis huMAS?


y. 9:34b And they cast him out. kai eXEba-lon [1544]auTON Exo.


NOTE: - This passage exposes the “religious” spirit of the Pharisees. Jesus said that the sabbathwas made as a blessing for man, not for man to use it as a legal whip over his fellow man. Jesus also showed how the law of Moses is notbroken if a man is circumcised on the 8thday when it falls on sabbath - nor is a man condemned for getting an animal out of a pit on the sabbath. How much more then was it right for Jesus to heal on the sabbath. This is notsabbath-breaking. But - try and tell that to one with a legal religious spirit!


Then see the wisdomof this man healed on the sabbath when confronted by the Pharisees with a religious spirit. They couldn't stand being wisely confronted by one not born into their select group! So they reviled the man, and put him out of the synagogue - and later killed Jesus because they couldn't control Him, nor His wisdom, nor His signs and wonders.


The religious spirit is notbased on the pure word of God, but on tradition such as can be found in the Talmud and Mishna, and man's religious rulings. Jesus confronted such for making void the word of God by their legal man-made authority.


Jesus however did notat His first coming - come to judge the religious spirit. The Word itself would do so at His second coming as Lord of lords and King of kings. Woe betide the individual and group in that day who operate in the religious spirit. Before the Great White Throne Judgment of Christ - they will learn their foolish and illegal judgment based on the religious spirit. It is notreligion we need - it is Christ Himself, and His wisdom of love. J.A.W.
